Between the two Browning writers I found that they were definitely
writers with a purpose. Many of their pieces seemed to have a purpose behind
the writing to reach a deeper meaning. I found myself drawn to Elizabeth
Barrett Browning a little more than Robert Browning. Her poems were written in
a way that I could find meaning in an artistic way. I also think that the
timing of when Barrett Browning wrote and her popularity as a woman is something
that I found very interesting about her that I also think played into her
writing.
The way
that Barrett Browning was not as concerned about writing about what was
accepted to the critics and society, but instead what she felt was right was a needed
in society. I think that this is something that is lost a lot in writing. Many
time writers get lost in what will be accepted and read more. However, through
writer life Barrett Browning we are able to see that it can go beyond this. The
poem Childe Roland is one poem that showed
me the power that Barrett Browning has through her artistic way of writing,
while still expressing a strong purpose. The voice that Barrett Browning gives
in her writing is to the ones that are weak and cannot find a place to be
heard. This was something that I found so interesting. It amazed me that a poem
can turned into something so meaningful. This idea is something that I learned
as I keep reading. Finding a deeper meaning through poem never really occurred to
me in a political way until I read Barrett Browning’s poem. I think the fact
that she does such an amazing job with tying the poems to a sense of ethos helps
to make the impact. Many times as a reader I created a feeling then was given a
deeper meaning of why that mattered. This design that Barrett Browning created
within her poem is something that myself as a reader reacted to very positively.
Through
the reading I found myself always finding new meaning within Barrett Browning’s
poems. She gave an artistic twist to produce more important matters. I think
something that drew me to each of her pieces is her genuine attitude and intent
shining through on each piece gave me better insight to the matters. After
reading some of the criticism that was written about Barrett Browning I applaud
her as a writer. She was told many times that she was out of her element and is
over stepping her boundaries. However, she never let this stop her. I think
this is amazing because there could have been so many places for her to stop
and she instead then preserved past this point. This class has opened my eyes
to a new writer that has given me so much more insight into poetry. I now see
how to read beyond what is given and find the deeper meaning that allows for a
better understanding.
